H.B. SIDE BEATEN • POVERTY BAY WINS 16—6. A FAST, OPEN GAME. The Poverty Bay junior representatives defeated tho Hawke’s Bay side on McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday afternoon, by 16 points to 6 in a fast, open game. The teams took the field very evenly matched with Poverty Bay setting the ball in motion, having the advantage of a slight breeze. Following a period of play about midfield the Black and Whites transferred hostilities to the visitors’ goal line. Taking tho ball, Nairn attempted to dive over near the posts, but lost possession. Again the attackers sorely tested 1 the defence, which, however, did not weaken and in a great rally the visitors swept down the field to the home twenty-five, where, from a scramble,. McLaghlan dived over in the corner to open the scoring account. Although making a great kick Webb just failed to send the ball over. I’nvi l.v Bay 3 Hawke's Bay 0
The visitors were again on attack, reaching to the home twenty-five, where play was carried into touch. The Black and Whites worked back to mid-field. The visitors again initiated a fast, open movement, which brought disaster to the home side. The visitors, handling the ball freely, sent it out to Aislabie, who made a great run, passing on to Pocock, who easily beat Russell to score in the- corner. Webb again failed in a great attempt to goal. Poverty Bay 6 Hawke’s Bay 0 With the ball again in play the Black and Whites began an invasion ivfiich was soon repulsed, the centre of play moving to the home twgntyfive - The home side, having the advantage in play along the side line, worked . back to midfield. Hodge fielded the leather and made a good run but gave a wild pass and. threw away a good chance to get his side moving. The visiting backs were now working splendidly and, catching the home side out of position, went for a merry excursion. McLaghlan finished off well out. and Webb raised the Hags to make the score read:— Poverty Bay 11 Hawke’s Bay 0 The Black and Whites were again in defence until Evans broke through, making a. great dash before being upset. The ball went to the ground when Stephenson challenged Owen for possession, but the touch-line inter, veiled and the visitors quickly shook off tlie attack. HIISIII repeatedly was gaining ground for tba Maguios, Owen made
a smart clearance when missing the ball and run back to kick but was well tackled # by Keith. The home side was now settling down to the visitors’ bustling tactics with the result that possession of the ball was being strenuously fought for. An infringement was given against the visitors and Beck attempted to goal from the side-line, the ball falling just under the bar. Although play went back to midfield the Magpies charged back but the defence was most decisive. The visiting forwards came through and let the ball out to McLaghlan, who raced down the field at amazing speed and kicked when confronted by Russell. A sortie followed on the home goal-line from which the defenders, from a free kick, gained to centre-way. The visitors got out of position, which cost them a try. Hodge, taking a pass, delighted the crowd by his dazzling breakaway. Passing to Beck, the latter passed in-field again to Hodge to finish off a fine piece of play. The kick at goal failed. Poverty Bay 11 Hawke's Bay 3 The Magpies, having steadied the visitors up considerably, were now having a much bigger share of the p.lay. A good line kick by Beck gained a slice of territory, but kicking when handling would have been better was responsible for them being sent back to midfield as halftime was called.
On changing over play hovered about mid-field until West, failing to get rid of the ball, let the Red and Blacks break through, and gain to the home goal-line. Being penalised, a free kick was given against them, which enabled the defence to raise the siege. Hodge beat the opposition from a scrum at mid-field and got the ball away to Thompson, who was grassed on the touch line. Keeping the ball at their feet, Keith, Rolls and Keeble gained within five yards of their objective, but Owen smartly pull ed up. From a loose rush Hodge, who had been playing a great game, received an injury which held play up for a few minutes., When the game resumed Collier dodged his way well down until upset. The ball then came out to Dandy, who raced down and beat the Magpies with the exception of Russell. His pass in-field went into a bunch of Red and Blacks, who fumbled in handling when a clear field was ahead. The Magpies now took a hand at attacking and rushed a determined offensive to the visitors' twenty-five. Desperate play followed on the goal line in which the attackers were awarded a free kick. Beck made n futile attempt to goal from the side line. 9 Play then came across the field, Dandy gaining considerable ground with a good, dodging run. Tho Magpies kept up the attack. Hodge tried to get through in the corner, but (Ovyen was again safe. A moment latex a try for Hawke’s Bay seemed
certain. From a loose scrum Hodge got tho ball out to West and Beck, tue latter, however, failing to take the pass, and the movement ended with Pocock racing off with the ball at his feet to the centreway wnere Russell kicked well up. A surprise then followed. In a period of loose play the visiting backs broke away, easily out-distancing the opposition and enabling McLaghlan, well attended, to run through and do the hat trick under tho posts, Webb converting. • Poverty Bay 16 Hawke’s Bay 3
Although the score was now reading with a good margin against them Hawke’s Bay were still full of fight, and the game still went on at a great speed. Again they attacked desperately and from the ruck Thompson and West gained to tho corner flag. At last the Magpies were rewarded. Keith scrambled over, but West fail ed to improve. Poverty Bay 16 Hawke’s Bay . 6 Poverty Bay rushed play to tho home twenty-five, where Webb, who was forced to run back with the ball, was hurt through colliding with an opposing player, and play was again held up. A free kick to the Black and Whites again put them on the attack, and they gained to the twentyfive flag. The spell ended shortly afterwards with the Magpies still unable to improve their score. Mr A. Mcßride ably controlled the game.
