To-night, at 7.30 o’clock, the Hastings Women’s Community Club will hold a bridge circle. Tho Hastings police are looking for the owners ot two travelling rugs, live collars and one overcoat. Three petitions in bankruptcy were filed at 'the Supreme Court at Napier during August, as compared with four in August, 1928. Mr. Harty Isaac, who is well known as an evangelist and a powerful speaker, will give an address in the Nelson Street Hall to-morrow evening at 7.30. A full attendance of members of the Hastings Chess Club is requested at a practice on Wednesday evening, in view of the pending match with the Napier Club. The annual general meeting of the Hastings Cricket Club will be held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms. Market street, at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4. The booking of reserved scats for the Otago v. Hawke’s Bay Rugby match opened to-day. The match takes place in Napier on Wednesday. As the hospital greement between the Hawke’s liny United Friendly Societies’ Council and tho Hospital Board ceases as from Saturday last, members entering the hospital after to-day do so at their own expense. “It won’t happen again, Sir,” pleaded a defendant at tho Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning when asking for leniency after pleading guilty to procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. “I’d just love to believe you,' but it’s an old, old story,” responded His Worshop.

Further inquiries have elicited that tho audience are in addition to be treated to an edifying chat during the evening by "The Man About Town.” This gentleman’s identity is still shrouded in mystery and, wo are given to understand, will not be disclosed even during the performance. The Hastings Free Kindergarten reopens for the third term on Tuesday, September 10. Parents wishing to enrol their children are asked to communicate with Miss H. Ford, 210 Nelson street S., ’phone 240. A meeting of the Hastings Citizens’ Band will be held in the bandroom at 8 o’clock to-morrow night to discuss the holding of a monster bazaar. All those interested are invited to attend. The music circle of the Hastings Women’s Community Club will meet at 8 o’clock to-morrow evening. Mrs Robertson and the Misses Marks, Miller and Pharazyn will provide the programme.

The Hastings vital statistics for the month of August are as follow, the figures in parentheses being the returns for August last year:— Births 32 (29), marriages 14 (15), deaths 20 (8) The figures for Napier are:—Births 56 (48), deaths 27 (12), and marriages 13 (15). “There would be no Court of Justice if everyone m the witness box was to tell the truth,” declared an Irish witness in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning. “My word, you’re right,” retorted His Worship (Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M.) “That is one of the truest statements I’ve heard for some time,” he added. The fifteenth anniversary of the occupation of the German Islands of Western Samoa was celebrated by tho Wellington U.S.A, on Saturday "by a reunion of the original members of the Expeditionary Force that landed there. Memories of past days were recalled; even the old songs of the impromptu camp concert were remembered, and many were the requests for “Mate o’ Mine,” or some other favourite, which brought back such happy associations. The public need scarcely be reminded of that popular annual fixture, the South Island dance, which takes place in the Hastings Assembly Hall next Wednesday evening. This great gathering of South Islanders and their many friends is always looked forward to with the keenest interest by everyone because of its sociability and frank comradeship. No doubt there will be a large crowd present on Wednesday night, when an evening of unalloyed enjoyment will await them. Tho matron of the Hawke’s Bay Children’s Home acknowledges with grateful thanks the following gifts to the Home:—Cakes, sandwiches, etc., Messrs Blythes Ltd., Mr Robertson. Tho Hastings Citizen’s Band gave an open-air concert at Cornwall Park, yesterday afternoon, in beautiful weather. There was a largo attendance of the public, and the collection, which was in aid of tho Mayor’s unemployment fund, amounted to tho satisfactory sum of £l3, which was particularly acceptable, as the fund was getting rather low. The selections played by the band were much enjoyed, especially the cornet solo, “Titania,” played by Mr Taylor, and “A Trip to Blackpool,” which was included in the programme by request.

The programme of Mr C. B. Spinney’s organ recital in Hastings, on Wednesday night, in which he will be assisted by Miss Prudence Lewis, a young Hastings violinists, will include Prelude in G Major (Bach); intermezzo, from “Cavalleria Rusticana” (Mascogne); Phantasie, from Sonata 12 (Bhcinbcrger); Scherzio Romantieo (Mansfield); “Finlandia” (Sibelius);; “A Christmas Pastoral (Lu-ard-Sclby), and Pean (Grand Offertorie), (Spinney). Miss Prudence Lewis will play “Legend” (Wieniawski) and “Hymn to the Sun” Rim-sky-Korsakoff).

The weather report for Napier for August shows that rain fell on 12 days during the month, with a rainfall of 2.81 inches. Tho highest rainfall was on tho 7th, when 98 points were recorded. The rainfall for August of last year was over 4J inches. There were several cold days during the month, when frosts were recorded on 10 mornings. In spite of this the sun refused to shine on two days only, and the average sunshine for the month was six hours per day, showing that spring weather has arrived. Prospects for the future are bright as regards the farming community should this month prove to be a showery one.
