MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SITTING AT NAPIER. TO-DAY’S CASES. At the Napier Magistrate’s Court this' morning Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., presided. Hermann Leopold was charged with driving a car at a speed deemed dangerous to tho public, and with driving at a speed in excess of the by-law.—The defendant was fined £2 on the first charge and 10/- on the second. Costs in each case amounted to 10/-. Philip Henry Scullin was charged with failure to provide a passenger on his motor cycle with footrests as required by the regulations.—He was fined 10/- and costs 10/-. Edward Kirwan was fined £2, and costs 10/-, for being on licensed premises, the Terminus Hotel, after hours. On a charge of making a false declaration, that he was a lodger at the hotel, Kinvan was also fined £3 and costs 10/-. Walter Ernest Goodall pleaded guilty to a breach of the terms of his probation order. He failed to report twice a month.—Probation Officer Cook stated that this was one cf the difficulties faced by the Probation Department. “These young men promise anything to obtain their liberty, and then they are inclined to treat the matter as a joke,” stated Mr. Cook, who added that he was not asking for a severe penalty, but he wished to make this case a warning to others Goodall had his probation order extended for another four months. His Worship severely reprimanded Goodall Ray Chittenden was charged with driving at a speed which might be dangerous.—Ho was fined £1 and costs 10/-. Reginald McCutcheon faced two charges: (1) Driving round a corner at a greater speed than required by the by-law; and (2) with driving a car at a speed deemed dangerous to the public.—He was fined 10/_ on the first charge and £1 on the second. Costs in each ease amounted to 10/-.
