WHAT DO THEY WANT?

NAPIER HARBOUR BOARD ASKS OVERSEA SHIPOWNERS. At last week’s meeting of the Napier Harbour Board it was resolved that, a' letter should he sent to the Oversea Shipowners' Allotment Committee asking them to state clearly the requirements that would have to be fulfilled, before their companies’ ships would make use of the Breakwater wharf for loading frozen meat. At the meeting it was also resolveci that copies of the letter, when written should be supplied to the press for publication, but owing to some misunderstanding, no copy of it reached the “Tribune.” Although the substance of it was embodied in our report of the meeting, we now give the text for the fuller information of our readers. It is as’follows: Text of Letter. “The local freezing companies have, handed to this board a ropy of your letter to them dated February 6 in reference to their inquiry as to tho possibility of loading frozen meat at the Breakwater wharf. “We note in your reply that you say you consider that the Napier Breakwater as it is at present is not a suitable berth for the accommodation of the vessels engaged in the meat trade—that future improvements which may be made to the Breakwater may permit' of meat loading there, but at this stage you are unable, to . make any definite statements in this connection. “You can appreciate the fact that this matter if of great concern to the Napier Harbour Board and to its customers, the meat companies. “The board trusts you will pardon us for asking for a more definite statement as to what improvements are, in your technical advisers’ opinion, necessary- before your ships may load meat at the Breakwater. “In your reply you will be good enough to state the minimum amount of improvements which would be considered sufficient to enable your ships to berth at the Breakwater. “We would suggest that before coming to a decision upon this matter, your advisers might like to confer with the board’s harbour, master whose local knowledge might be of great assistance. Tf they so desired the board would t-e glkd to allow Captain White-Parsons to wait upon your advisers in Wellington at any date convenient to yourselves.”
