RUAHINE S MENAGERIE. VALUABLE IMPORTATIONS. There was a small menagerie of animals oil board the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer, Ruahine, which arrived at Wellington on Wednesday from England. The ship’s live stock passengers included a valuable grey Percheron stallion, 169 Angora and Cjhiiichilla rabbits, eleven turkeys, a Pekinese dog, and a Persian cat, the last two being the property of a Norwich family who have come to settle in New Zealand. The .turkeys, which are bred from a good English strain, have been imported by the Countess of Orford, who., with the Earl of Orford, arrived from England on the last voyage of the Rauhine. There were twelve turkeys when the. ship left England, hut one died during the passage. They will he sent to the home of the Earl and Countess' of Orford; ■at Manuwera, Auckland. The shipment of Angora and Chinchilla rabbits is by far tho largest and most valuable that has ever come to the Dominions, and is evidence of tho growing importance of this industry in New Zealand. IVhen the Ruahine left England there were 186 rabbits, in two consignments, but 17 died on the way out.
