In the New Year Honours list peerages are conferred on the following :— Sir Jesse Boot, of the well-known firm of chemists, for services in the prpmition of education. Mr. Urban Huttleston Rogers Broughton, in consideration of the public, political and philanthropic services of his father, the late Mr. Urban Hanlon Broughton, whose election to the peerage would have been recommended to His Majesty but for his death on January 30 last. Mr. Urban Hanlon Broughton was a well-known British engineer and was engaged for many years in engineering. mining and railway work in the United States, becoming president of various big compani-s. Sir Berkelv Moynihan, president of the Royal College of Surgeons.

The nine recipients of baronetcies include Mr. Frederick Eckstein, chairman of the Sudan Plantations Syndicate, for services to the Sudan • Mr. William Horne, chairman of the Prudential Assurance Co.; Mr. Alexander Park Lyle, chairman of the Lyle Shipping Co., for services in connection with the Scottish National War Memorial: and Mr. William Morris, chairman of Morris Motors.
