Mr. H. W. C. Baird, who represented the Hastings Chamber of Commerce at the recent conference, has presented the Chamber with a photograph of the members of the conference, which will be hung in the rooms.

It is reported that there are 43 dentists in Hawke’s Bay, according to the register of practitioners just published. Eighteen of these are in Napier, eleven ip Hastings, seven in Dannevirke, four in Wairoa, two iu Waipukurau and one in Waipawa.

The Waipukurau Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s ninteenth annual show will be held on the Waipukurau racecourse to-morrow (Wednesday), and from the splendid entries received there is every reason to anticipate a record show.

The necessity for mothers and those in charge of babies and little children taking precautions not to allow- their charges to be exposed to the sun without some covering for their heads during the present excessive hot weather is urged by the Plunket nurses.

The new Moth aeroplane, which will be handed over to the Christchurch Aero Club, was given its first flight on Friday, when it was taken up for a short space by Captain J. L. Findlay. This is the first Moth with the Gipsy engine to arrive in New Zealand.

At last night’s meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison) said that during the holidays a thousand people had sought the advantages of the Beatson Park camping grounds. The revenue up to the preesnt for the current season amounted to £5O. One party spent £3O in the town.

At last night’s meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, Mr. J. Wilson submitted a report of a committee appointed to compile a list of persons likely to become members. He placed twenty names before the meeting, as a commencement, and each will be interviewed by individual members. The committee, however, had between 30 and 40 other names in view.

Regulations gazetted last week authorise the Gisborne Borough Council to discontinue and abandon its tramway system and to dispose of the lines, rolling stock and plant (reports the Poverty Bay Herald). This authority, however, cannot be utilised until an efficient and comprehensive motor bus service is available substantially to replace the tramway service.

At the Napier Court this morning, before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., Basil Hodgson, aged 27 years, appeared charged with the theft of a bicycle, valued at £lO, the property of C. H. Tidy, at Napier, on January 16th. and was remanded, on the application of Senior-Sergeant Powell, until Monday next. The police intimated that it was probable further charges would be preferred.

At the meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce last evening, the chairman said that a statement had appeared in the papers that a Railway Department officer, in evidence at Napier, deposed that they had no complaints regarding tho Hastings-Napier ’bus service. That was not in accord with fact, because tho Chamber had written to the Department complaining, and the letter had been acknowledged. The Mayor also said that it was incorrect. because he had also made complaint.

Once, perhaps twice a year the Heretaunga Sports Club hold a sports meeting in Hastings. When that fixture is staged naturally all the resources of the club are behind it. This year the club has excelled itself in a big effort to make the meeting the greatest success of the year. Next Saturday will see the pick of New Zealand axemen competing at Nelson Park. A star attraction will Ire an exhibition chop bv the wo:M’s one-arm axeman champion. In addition to this branch of sport there will be an interesting athletic meeting. All the cracks from the East Coast will be contesting the rights to hold the beautiful trophies offered. Amateurs are well catered for and there should be a great day’s sport ahead. The Criterion block, in the heart of Napier, which is owned by the Napier Borough Council, is not a very imposing building, and as the leases expire very shortly the council have had under consideration of late plans for the reconstruction of the whole area. Last night a snecial meeting of the council was held in committee to discuss with representatives of the Hawke’s Bay-Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects the plans, specifications and estimates for the proposed rebuilding. The council also considered the question of taking the necessary steps to construct the building in accordance with the plans, and also the conditions of the position of the future tenants, and also of thoep tenants and lessees whose terms of occupation of the present building expire in March and June next.

The Mayor of Hastings (Mr. G. A. Maddison) informed the Chamber of Commerce last evening that the condition of the road from the end of the concrete at Karamu Bridge, to the Mangateretcre corner, was (hocking. Attention was also directed by Mr. F. S. Budd to the condition of the road from Havelock North to Waimarama, especially at the turn from Ocean Beach. It was decided to urge the County Council to remedy these conditions. Attention was also drawn to the state of the strip of Karamu road extending from the ■borough boundary to the commencement of the County Council’s concrete work. The Mayor said that the strip was regarded by the County Council as a boundary road, and they endeavoured to put the cost on the borough. The Highways Board refused to contribute a penny. It was now proposed to transfer the boundary roads to the Highways Board, the Highways Board to pay three-fiftlm and the borough and county two-fifths of the maintenance.
