NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP OPENING MATCHES Wanganui, Dec. 27. The North Island Rifle Championship meeting was opened on the Putiki range tliis morning. Riflemen were present from all parts of the Dominion and included E. King (Wanganui, the present Now Zealand champion), A. Ballinger, James, R. J. King, and Captain Masefield, all ex-champions. A tricky wind blowing down the gully made the going hard for competitors. The arrangements were well up to standard, thanks to Captain Dixon and his staff. Following are the prinical results:— Match No. 1 (300 yards).—T. Orr (Greytown), 32, £2 10/-; J. H. Kearney (Napier), 32, £2 10/-; H. Nicholls (Petone), 31, £1 10/-. Wanganui Match, Match No. 1 (series A); 32 prizes valued at £4o.— F. J. Soler (Wanganui), 48, £5; R. J. King (Opaki), 48, £4; E. A. Ballinger (Petone), 48, £3. Taranaki match (series A), 32 prizes, valued at £4O. — Mclver (Petone), 49, £5; R. Farrow (Tararua) 49, £4; Patterson (Wanganui) 48, £3. Wellington match, No. 3, 600 yards. —L. N. Garner (Wanganui) 48, £4 10/-; C. M. Broughton (Wanganui) 47, £4; A. R. Elgar (Hawera) 46, £3. Manawatu match, No. 6, 500 yards. —R. Nicholson (Napier) 48, £5; D. McKenzie (Opaki) 48, £4; V. Jones (Kimbolton) 48, £3. The Putiki aggregate, over matches 1,2 and 3, champion series, was won by A. W. Powell (Akarana Club).
