Mr. John Warren has just returned from a holiday spent in the Auckland district. There passed away in the Waipukurau Hospital yesterday an old and esteemed resident of Waipukurau in the person of Mrs. Jane Clark, wife of Mr. Archibald Clark. The jleceased lady, who was of Scottish birth, had reached middle age. being 54 years old. Death was the result of an attack of influenza for attention to which ailment she entered the hospital on the 26th inst. The late Mrs. Clarke had been associated with her husband for a number of years in conducting the Kosy Tea Room and only recently disposed of the business.
The funeral of the late Mrs. J. B. Green took place yesterday afternoon, being attended by a representative number of mourners. Under the auspices of the Waipnkurau District High School Committee, a public meeting was held last night for the purpose of arranging for a testimonial in honour of Air. F. B. Curd who, for the past 16 years, has been headmaster of the school and is about to retire (for health reasons). A very pleasing social gathering of Manchester Oddfellows and brethren of the Foresters’ Order, togetliei with the lady friends of tho respective members was held recently, the function serving to emphasise the harmonious relationship existing between the local lodges concerned. Miss Al. AlcLeod provided the excellent dance music, while Bro. G. R. Cook, P.G., acted as M.C. NonUancers enjoyed card games, and all patrons weie regaled with an appetising supper.
Sister G. Robinson, N.G., presided over a fairly large attendance of members of Arlington Rebekah Lodge of N.Z. Oddfellows on Wednesday night. Remits for the Grand Lodge session (biennial) to be held at Nelson on March 28th next were considered. Bro. T. A. Williams, D.D.G.M., was nominated for the office of Grand Lodge representative for the Hawke’s Bay district. One proposal for membership was received. The social committee of the Lodge decided to meet the Waipukurau Lodge committee in regard to holding a 'Xmas Tree this year. The Lodge then closed in the usual form, harmony following.
