POWER SHUT-DOWNS

PROTESTS AGAINST FREQUENCY REDCLJ FFE EXPERIMENTS THE CAUSE. Of late there have been frequent failures in the electric supply to Hastings and Napier, and ut the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening, Mr. .1. H. Scott, electrical engineer, reported that during the past three days there hud been nearly a dozen stoppages. A Government official was experimenting with condensers at the Redeliffe sub-station. He thought the Council should protest against experiments that would cause stoppages in the supply being carried on during the important hours of supply. The Council decided to protest to the Government ns desired. At the meeting of the Hawke's Bay Electric Power Board yesterday, Mr. J. W. Callaghan stated that the failures a fleet eel Napier more than they did Hastings. The officials of the department had been asked not to carry out their experiments during the daytime, as great inconvenience would be experienced if there were failures.

The engineer (Mr. H. L. Benjamin) stated that the reason why the experiments nere carried out during the daytime was because a specialist from Wellington was in the district, and he wished to return to Wellington as quickly ns possible. It was decided to protest to the. Public Works Department against the interruptions.
