MISAPPROPRIATION

MISUSE OF STATE FUNDS. WOMAN COLLEGE PRINCIPAL SENTENCED. (United Press Association—By Cabin** Copyrigut.) [Australian and N.Z. Press AssnJ New York, September 4. A message from Albany states that Mrs Knaap has been sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment. The judge pointed out that, due to the fact that her career had been ruined and she had experienced heavy mental suffering, he considered a light sentence adequate. The most serious charge of malfeasance while in office made against a woman since power to hold office was granted to women in America, was lodged against Mrs Florence Knapp, dean of the College of Home Economics at Syracuse University in May last. The New York Commissioner alleged the illegal disbursement of 118,000 dollars and the waste of nearly 80,000 dollars in her administration of census funds. The charges include nepotism, and the giving away of State funds, which were ultimately traced back as in her possession. The maximum penalty is 10 years’ imprisonment.
