General sympathy is expressed with Mr and Mrs H. Hunt, of Baupare, in the loss of their infant daughter.

Mr J. C. T. Tikao. of Wainui, has decided to stand in the Reform inter ests for the Southern Maori electorate.

Sir Joseph Ward, who left early in the year on a visit to England, was expected to leave on his return journey to the Dominion on Saturday.

The Rev. J. A. . Lush, for many years Vicar at Havelock’ North, and now Vicar of Invercargill, is going on a trip to South America.

The Rev. S. L. Boot, of the Northcote Presbyterian Church, who has accepted a call from the Balrannal Church in New South Wales, will leave by the Marama on August 17.

Wanganui exchanges record the death, aged 73, of Mr George Walker, a native of that town and for very many years a farmer at Mourn, Jowett near Aramoho.

Mr. Harold Lowry Penny, aged 44, of Christchurch, manager of the Canadian National Steamship Co., is dead. He was born in England and was well known throughout New Zealand—(Press Association.)

Major F. H. Lampson, D.S.O. Major D. A. Hickey, D. 5.0., Major JJ. N. J. Fraser, and Captain J. H. Grover, all well-known officers of the New Zealand Military Forces, have been posted to the retired list.

Much regret will be felt at nows of the sudden death at Wanganui of Mrs Florence Irene Russell. Mrs Russell was a former resident of Napier, where her husband, Mr A. O. Russell was district manager of the A.M.P. Society.

A prominent Californian yachtsman in the person of Mr Jotham W. Bixby arrived at Auckland by the Tofua on Monday. Mr Bixby has beer, touring the South Sea Islands and will spend some time in New Zealav. 1 before going on to Australia. Mr Bixy is the owner of the moter yacht Los Cirritos, one of the most palatial yachts in Californian waters.

The death occurred on Saturday last at Devonport, Auckland, of Mr Robert Baxter, aged 69. well known in banking and commercial circles in the Northern City. He retired only two years back from the managership f the Newton branch of the National '•ank, with which he had then completed a full half-century of active service.

Many tributes of respect were paid to the late Mrs T. W. Williams, who passed away at Mataroa on July 20. The late Mrs Williams was the eldest daughter of the late Mr John Bicknell, of Puketapu, Hawke’s Bay, ana a sister of Mr J. Bicknell, of Puketapu. Mrs Williams was married in 1881, she and her husband taking up land in Inland Paten, then a lonely outpost of civilisation. At the funeral the Maoris, represented by their chief Ngahuia Pine, paid their last tribute by the graveside, covering ths coffin with a beautiful Maori mat—the greatest honour they can pay a departed one.
