OTANE
The local Gun Club held a shoot on Saturday, there being a good attendance of shootists. The weather was perfect, with the result that some very good shooting was recorded. Air. J. Ashby, as referee, was prompt in his decision and gave every satisfaction. A ladies’ committee, consisting of Mesdames Smith, Robottom and Rumbal, provided the refreshments. The first match was a seven-bird sweepstake, which resulted in “possibles” being recorded by Messrs. J. Waldron, G. W. Thorpe and E. Gilbertson, who divided the prize money. The second match was a nine-bird trophy match in which Messrs. A. Robottom (18 yards), J. Mills (15 yards), J. Renderdine (12) and A McGaffin (17) each put up the possible, the two former on the first barrel. In tho shoot off A. Robottom won and J. Kenderdine took second prize. Another nine-bird trophy match followed in which possibles were recorded by J. T. Rumbal, G. W. Thorpe, N. McGaffin and T. Ryan. In the shoot off Ryan and Thorpe went to the 18th. bird when the latter missed and T. Ryan took the prize. Eighteen shooters then toed tho mark for a quail drive (7 birds). T, Howard and J. Mills, with the possible, divided first and second money, and Furminger, Andrews, Thorpe and Fraser divided third money.
The final match was a five-bird sweepstake, in which Thorpe, Ryan, Kenderdine and McGaffin, with the possible, divided the money,. During an interval in the proceedings, Mr. M. Ryan, president of the Club, thanked the visitors for their attendance, and for the fine sporting spirit displayed by the competitors, this being particularly noticeable when the other competitors allowed a novice another shoot which resulted in his getting the possible and being in the shoot-off. So long as such actions were performed there was no need to worry about the future of the Club. Mr. Ryan then presented the prizes. Cheers were given for the winners, and also for Mr. F., Farminger, a very keen member who provided one of the trophies, this being the second trophy presented by hi mthis year.
GENERAL NEWS On Saturday the local school football an dbasketball teams ' travelled to Waipukurau to meet the Porangahau School in friendly games. The boys ’team lost the football, being beate nby 11 to 9, but the girls were successful, winning by 7 to nil. On Saturday night Mr. J. Ashby presided, over a committee meeting of the Debating Society, when it was decided to make an effort to get Mr. A. F.. Mander, of the W.E.A. to deliver a lecture during the month. The local ladies’ basket ball team playe da match with the Waipawa High. Schoo! team on the Recreation Ground on Saturday, being defeated by 12 to 6.
