PARIS SUBURB IN STATE OF SIEGE. FIFTY' ARRESTS. [United Service.] Paris Aug. 5. The suburb of Ivry, witn 40,000 inhabitants, where the authorities prohibited a Communist anti-Militarist demonstration, was in a state of siege yesterday. Armed police patrolled the streets from dawn and 3000 police and firemen, arriving in motor lorries, occupied strategic posts. Services were suspended in order to search the town for Communists, who hid in cafes and bars, whither gendarmes pursued them. The Mayor smacked a gendarme’s face and was promptly arrested. Tho apprehension of 500 Communists followed.
Garrison troops in Paris were detained in barracks in case of violence, as the situation was regarded as a test of strength between the police and the Communists.
Fifty Red guards were arrested r.s they left a demonstration in Paris last night. The position later quietened.
