Major Wood and Captain Johnson passed through Hastings this morning on their way to Masterton on inspection work.

Sergeants-Major Milburn (Hastings) and Fraser and Wallis (Napier), left this morning for Trentham, to undergo examination for warrant rank.

Messrs. R. Paynter and H. G. Apsey left Hastings this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the local fruit control committee.

Mr. J. Stickland has been appointed manager of the team of Hawke’s Bay boxers which will take part in the New Zealand championships at Auckland.

Mr. J. Vigor Brown, Mayor of Napier, was last evening accorded a vote of condolence by the Napier Borough Council on the death of his daughter, Miss Ruby Brown.

Mr Arthur Chamberlain, a noted breeder of Shorthorns and Shropshire sheep, has died at the age of 71, states a Press Association telegram from Christchurch.

Captain A. Bangard, M.C., N.Z. SC., has received notice of his transfer from Whangarei to Gisborne. He will be replaced by Captain A. D. T. Neville, Coast Defence, Welling to tn.

Sergeant-Major O’Leary, of Hastings, who has given very valuable service in the cause of boxing, was lasting evening presented with a case of pipes by the executive committee of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association.

A message from Winnipeg states that Archbishop Matheson, Primate of the Anglican Church in Canada, has announced his retirement from the primacy. He will continue as Bishop of Rupertsland. He is 76 years of age. His successor will be chosen in September.

Sir John Russell, K. 8., Director of Rothamsted Experimental Station, England, was to be the chief guest and speaker at a combined luncheon tendered in his honour by the New Zealand and University Clubs at Wellington to-day. He ’ will leave for Nelson this evening, and to-morrow with deliver the Cawthron lecture, the subject of which is “The Rothamsted Station and the Influence of its Founders on the Development of Scientific Farming.” Sir John Russell, after a brief tour of the South Island, will return to Wellington in time to catch the Rotorua sailing foi England on August 13.
