STARTLING EXPERIENCE
GRIPPED BY AN OCTOPUS. HASTINGS RESIDENT’S CLOSE CALL. A Hastings resident had a decidedly unpleasant experience at Cape Kidnappers yesterday whilst wading in the tide in search of shell fish amongst the rocks. With his cants rolled high and the water up to his knees, he suddenly felt his right leg clasped in a spiral embrace, extending from just above the ankle to mid-thigh and such was the force of the pull that he was obliged to cling to a rock in order to resist the steady strain of a mediumsized octopus, the tentacles of which held him fast. It was not until the creature’s limb was cut through that he got free. Needless to say the fish was captured and dispatched without any delay. The person involved "was a strong young man but. if it had been a child, with no assistance at hand, it would have fallen a prey to the loathsome thing, so that people visiting this part of the const should exercise the greatest caution for the safety qf the children in their care, as well as for their own sakes.
