DAIRY PRODUCTION AT MATAMATA
RESULT OF FERTILISERS. A visitor to Matamata, who is manager of a sheep station in Hawke's Bay, states that he could never understand how Matamata could produce to the extent indicated by the figures published from time to time, but after taking a look around the district he could well believe that the figures were accurate. What surprised him was the cleanness of the paddocks, he being used to sheep country where the stock were not heavy enough to keep down manuka and scrub generally. However, even local people get a surprise when told that, there are 30,000 milking cows within a radius of ten miles of Mata-
mata, says the local newspaper. The figures can be proven by reference to the number of cows used for supplying the various factories in and out of the district. Matamata hea.ds the list of all stations south of Auckland for the amount of fertilisers railed, totalling 13,464 tons for the year ending March 31st, 1928. There is probably no greater wealth-produc-ing rural area in the Dominion.
