WAIPAWA.

NEWS AND NOTES. (Own Correspondent.) The rainfall registered in the Waipawa for July totalled 1.86, and the total for the seven months 20.99 in. A “gift” evening was tendered Miss M. Carson and Mr Stan. O’Halloran in St. Peter’s Schoolroom on Monday, and as an evidence of their popularity there was a very large number present. The evening was spent in dancing and cards, and was a very enjoyable one. Tho Waipawa Operatic Society held their first practice of “H.M.S. Piafore” on Tuesday evening, and the large attendance augurs well for a successful production. Mr Joseph Cosgrave wielded the baton and Miss B. Milburn was at the piano. The part singers were each put through their parts separately, and excellent progress was made. Tho Waipawa District High School Committee held their monthly meeting on Thursday evening, when there was a full attendance as follows:— Messrs C. 11. Critchley (chair), S. B. Houghton (secretary). W. Yates. N. Verran, W. Cade, L. Pratley, S. Strang and E. Bott. The headmaster’s report was read and considered very satisfactory. The recommendations of the visiting committee were adopted and repairs and improveauthorised. The cramped condition of the classes was mentioned, and it was resolved to ask the Board to secure extra accommodation pending the erection of the new school. Messrs Verran and Yates were appointed a visiting committee for the coming month. The fine weather experienced in this district for the last few days is a welcome change. The farmers are experiencing many losses of ewes, attributed to the over-abundance of feed. The many friends of Mr Irvine Cheers will be pleased to hear that he has much improved in health after a recent holiday spent in the Wanganui district. A special meeting of the parishioners of St. Peter's Church was held on Wednesday evening in the Sunday school. A motion was passed that a loan of £5O from tho Diocesan Office be applied for for the purpose of renovating the old vicarage in Rose street. A good deal of discussion took place on a proposal to erect a new vicarage near the Sunday school, and to dispose of the present vicarage, The proposal, however, was not entertained. At a subsequent meeting of the vestry a report on the duplex system, of contributing to church funds, inaugurated early in the year, was received, and although the results so far are gratifying, the amount being raised is not quite adeuate to meet all the obligations of the Vestry. The ideal sought is to raise sufficient without having recourse to bazaars, shops or other special efforts.
