FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
PRECAUTIONS AGAINST SPREAD A. AND P. SOCIETY RESOLUTION. A letter regarding foot and mouth disease was received by the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society to-day from the Director-General of Agriculture. He advised that every precaution was taken in' the matter both in respect to live-stock and vegetation. Mr J. Absolum stated that the Department did not appear to show any signs of doing anything further What had been done was the result of continual representations to the Department. It was essential that great care should be exercised in the importation of roses and bulbs. It was most difficult to detect any disease in the vegetation but the danger was not so much in the manure need but in the composition used for packing. He then asked the seertary to read a report of the activities earned out by certain South Island bodies The chairman suggested that the society write to the Department asking that the importation of live sock or any substance likely to carry infection from all affected countries be prohibited for a period of five years.
Several members favoured prohibiting the importation from all countries and others considered that the period should be less. After further discussion it was decided to make representations to have the importation of all live-stock and substance liable to carry infection, prohibited for a period of two years. Other societies are to be asked to support the representations.
