Mr. W. J. Rush has been elected president of the Havelock North Bowling Club.

Mr. W. J. Holdsworth has been appointed District Commissioner of Scouts for the Auckland district, in succession to Mr. R. C, Grigsby.

Mr. H. D. Acland, of Christchurch, has retired from the chairmanship of the Canterbury College Board of Governors, after ten years in that position.

The death is announced of Beatrice, wife of Sir Frederick Dutton. Lady Dutton was the daughter of Colonel Charles Bridges, Brighton.—A.P.A London cable.

Mr. T. Corkill left Wairoa on Sunday on a short holiday visit to the Wairarapa and Wellington. It is understood that Saturday’s game was his last appearance on the Wairoa football field, as he is seeking employment elsewhere.

Captain T. Farr D. 5.0., M. 0., of ■the Royal N.Z. Artillery, has been promoted Major. During the war Major Farr served with the New Zealand Field Artillerv nt Gallinoli and in France, and commanded the 13th Battery, 3rd Brigade, N.Z.F.A,

The Rev John Hobbs left Hastings this morning for Gonville. Wanganui, where he will relieve the Rev. G. I). Malcolm, vicar at Gonville. who is to make a four-months’ visit to England.

The Mayor of Hastings (Mr. G. A. Maddison) is now able » visit the municinal offices, but he is not allowed to place any weight on his leg and is obliged to use crutches when he leaves his motor-car.

The Rev. M. W. P. Lascelles, secretary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, who represented New Zealand at the Baptist World Congress at Toronto, returned bv the Maunganui. which arrived at Wellington last pight.

Mrs Maguire, wife of Dr. C. E. Maguire, superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, informed a deputation of Reform party supporters at Auckland last night, that she would contest the Auckland East seat at the general election, in the Reform party’s interest.

The death occurred at Hamilton yesterday of Mr. Alexander Watts Williamson, a retired schoolmaster, of the Wanganui and Wellington districts, in his 79th year. Deceased was a graduate of the Otago University before its incorporation in the University of New Zealand.. He celebrated his golden wedding last nloiith. Following a long and varied service to education, Kir E, C. Purdie, secretary of the Auckland Education Board, has decided to retire towards the end of the present year. Mr. Purdie is one of the best-known figures in educational circles, and was for a considerable time inspector of schools. He was also a well-known headmaster. Mr. Purdie twice unsuccessfully contested the Marsden seat at a general election.

The death occurred nt Cook Hospital on Tuesday of Mrs Jane Marietta Clay, formerly a well-known and highly lespected identity of the Ormond district. The late Mrs Clay was born in England, and came to New Zealand 43 years ago, first settling at Opotiki. During the past 28 years she has resided in the Poverty Bav district at various times, and latetly she has been living with her son in Gisborne and with her daughters in Hastings (Mrs K. G. Thompson) and Whakatane.

Kitchen (Hastings).

Post-graduate scholars of the New Zealand University are at about this time leaving for England to continue their advanced studies at various universities, the Michaelmas term opening early in October. The two Rhodes Scholars left several weeks ago; to-day Messrs E. Beaglehole. M.A. (Victoria), and F. L. Kay. M.A. (Canterbury) left by the Marama. the former proceeding to London University, where he will continue his work in psychology, the latter to Emmanuel College. Cambridge. where he aims at the Classical Tripos.
