WHEN IN THE MUD
HOW BEST TO GET OUT. The best solution for getting a car out of a mud hole is to try to back out of the rut. slowly and steadily. This requires quite clever manipulation at the wheel and throttle. The engine cannot be raced, for the wheels will only spin around and dig deeper into the mud< The car must be directed so that the rear wheels will grip and pull out along the easiest possible lines. Bather than a board laid lengthwise, to direct the wheels of the car along it, is is advisable 10 get a few short, rough pieces of strong timber and lay them across the path of the wheels. Once the tyre can get a grip on the nearest piece of timber there is a good chance of the wheel climbing up and out on these pieces. The timber will not dig into the mud if long and heavy enough. In place of timber, bricks or stones may be used. In order to get a good start out of the mud a bed of stones may be laid under the rear axle, as foundation for the jack, and the car jacked up enough so that heavy timber ir stone may bo put beneath tha wheel. In either case, just placing the timber or stones unflcr or directly behind the wheel is not enough. A long and thick bed should be continued far out in order to give the car a good start out of the rut.
