HASTINGS COURT-HOUSE.
(To the Editor). Sir,—The citizens of Hastings should be more than pleased to possess a fighting Mayor like Mr. Maddison, wlio assisted bv the borough staff, Town Clerk, engineers and workmen have individually and collectively built up a reputation for not being satisfied with anything but the very best. Why then should the Government, “having promised a new and up-to-date Court-house,” think we will be satisfied with an old shack like the nresent building done up and dyed.- biot much. The mere suggestion is an insult to the intelligence ol Hastings residents, besides being an economically unsound proposition, and 1 suggest to our Mayor that he, without delay, get into touch with our member, Mr H. M Campbell, M.P., and, with his sympathetic cooperation which 1 am sure he will readily get, insist upon the Government giving us the very best. The idea ot throwing away £l6OO is absolutely astounding. Take this sum, with the site paid tor, plus the £3OOO on the Estimates and the money the old site may be sold for, and the money the old buildings would bring as firewood, and the total will provide more than enough to erect up-to-date buildings. Look at the Post Office, which will stand in honour of the present Government and be a monument to their economic efficiency. Why bother about the two-sided records of lawful and unlawful. Their old blunderbuss is only loaded with borer and dust, and we can trust our Mayor and member to see that no second-hand goods shall be offered as good enough to clothe our beautiful Queen, Hastings. Yours, etc., P.I.P. Hastings, 25/5/28.
