ROAD WORK
COUNTY COUNCIL'S PROGRAMME. EXPENDITURE OF £60,000 PROPOSED. The H.B. County Council is contemplating an extensive programme of road work which the Main Highways Board will be asked to subsidise. The expenditure will amount to £60,000, to be spent as follows:— Napier-Wellington Highway— New bridge at Longlands, £3OO. Surface sealing Waitangi, £3OO. Clive to Hastings, concrete roadway, £21,000. Hastings southwards, four miles concrete roadway, £25,000. N a pier-Gisborne High way— Surface sealing Westshore embankment, £7OO. Four miles surfacing from Westshore to Petane, £4OOO. Eskdale-Te Pohue Highway— Dillon’s Hill bridge, £llOOO. Marshall’s Crossing £6OO (on account of a larger amount). Taradale-Rissington Highway— Rissington bridge. £lOOO (on account of a larger amount). Nanier-Taradale Highway— Surface sealing Taradalo road, £lOOO. Hastings-Maraekakaho Highway— Maraekakaho bridge, £l2OO. In addition to those amounts a liberal application is being made for maintenance When considering this programme at the County Council meeting yesterday Mr. T. E. Crosse feared that the Highways Hoard might object to the work on the Petane-Westshore section as its policy appeared to be to link up'complete sections of permanent work rather than commence fresh patches. Mr. C. C. Smith criticised the Board’s methods of subsidy granting and quoted the instance of Whangnrei receiving £4 for £l, whereas the council was only receiving 30/- foi £l. Mr. Campbell explained that the question of subsidy was in the hands of tile board. It paid just as it thought fit. Tn < lirisli liiireli as much as £5 for £1 had been received.
