TWICE VETOED
U.S. FARM RELIEF BILL CONDEMNED BY COOLIDGE. PRICE REGULATION UNWORKABLE, [United Press Assn.—By Cable— Copyright! [Australian aud N.Z. Press Assu.l (Received 24. 9.10 a.m.) Washington, May 23. President Coolidge, for the second time, vetoed the McNaryHaugen Farm Relief Bill which was designed to aid the establishing of the agricultural industry. No chance of passing the Bill over the veto can now be seen. The Bill would have provided for the setting up of a Federal farm board, to be appointed by the President. which was to supervise surplus operations. President Coolidge made the following statement regarding his veto; “This document is much altered from its previous form but in substance, particularly as to its evident, ultimate effect of trying to delude the farmer with a fantastic promise of unworkable governmental price regulation, it is still as repugnant as ever to the spirit of our institutions, both political and commercial.”
The measure involved an appropriation of 250 million dollars to assist agricultural and co-operative organi. sations through the Federal Farm Board which would regulate the marketing of surplus products and benefit producers of maize, wheat rice, hogs, cattle, cotton and tobacco
