The Fruit Industry

Record Season for Hawke’s Bay Interesting Figures The phenomenal output of apples and pears, totalling 162,009 an d 32,826 cases respectively, has opened the eyes of the population of Hastings to the great potentialities of this favoured district as an apple and pear growing area as well as to the influence of the industry on the progress of the town and its surrounding country. At present there are about 3000 acres of land in this district under fruit, mostly apples and pears for export and home consumption, and it is anticipated that the production will increase steadily for a considerable time, even if there are no new orchards laid down, due to the fact of so many young orchards developing. The figures set forth below giving details of the season’s export of apples and pears to Europe, South America and Hawaii, showing a grand total of 194,835 cases, must prove interesting to a community whose well-being is so closely associated with the growth of the industry and it is worth mentioning that, notwithstanding the exceptionally large export, the local markets will not be depleted of fruit, as provision has been made for the cool storage of a large quantity to satisfy the local demand. A tremendous quantity of the fruit—over 50 per cent.—has oeen packed in the orchard packing sheds, a development of recent years, and, with the system of inspection carried out and the instruction imparted in gradingand packing, the standard of grading has been well maintained. Following are the returns supplied by Mr. N. J. Adamson, orchard instructor: —
