I’uflett) reported at today's meeting on the work done in the various ridings during the month as follows: — CLIVE AND HAVELOCK NORTH. The small wooden bridge culvert over the footpath channel leading to the county reserve at the Clive town ship was put in. The rubbish dump at the eastern end of the Tuki Tuki road bridge was cleaned up, and later the tins and rubbish will be covered with earth. The two bridges on the Tuki Tuki road are in bad repair. One bridge needs replacing by a larg 0 pipe culvert at a cost of £2OO, and the other at the Tuki Tuki station requires new stringers and decking at a cost of about £5O. The handrails of the small bridge on School road were painted white. The bumps on each side of the bridge approach will bo removed by the case grader as soon as Clifton road grading is finished. The new grader will commence grading on the Clifton road to-day. The whole surface will be scarified, the large stones broken, and additional small metal spread where necessary. Plans and specifications were prepared for the cement concrete pavement on the Farndon-Hastings Main Highway, and when approved by the Main Highways Board tenders can be called for tho work. The distance within the Clive riding is 2 miles and 47 chains. A gap of 22 chains is being left at tho Karamu bridge, and it is suggested this should be tar sealed until the now bridge is erected. The formation and metalling of Moore's road at the Tuki Tuki was completed last week. The Muddy Creek is finished, and bad bends in Haldane’s Irain were cut back. The drains on School and Mill roads are being cleaned this week. The electric lamps in the Clive township and along the - main road were erected and the light turned on last week. A contract was arranged for the formation of about 33 chains to extend Gilpin road to Simla Avenue. The work commenced last Monday and should be finished in about three weeks. Four chains on tho above length is within the Havelock Towe. District ,and the board has agreed to pay for that portion. A timber bridge is to lie erected in the gully. The span will bo about 12 feet and 4 feet clear waterway. The To Mahanga Settlement road was graded and tho verges graded off, and metal repairs are being done this week. Tho road along the railway line at Te Mahanga is being graded; verges are being ploughed off, and when ready tho metal repairs will be commenced. Tenders were accepted for metal patching of tho roads around Te Mahanga. and work will commence next week on on Douglas and Hobson’s roads. The contractor for the re-decking of tho Tuki Tuki bridge has met with an accident and is unable to undertake this work. 1 would suggest tho work be don e by the council's staff, and a start could be made immediately. The erection of the concrete bridge over the Herehere Stream on the PukahuHavelock road will be completed this week. As soon as the concrete has matured then approaches will be mad e and the bridge opened to traffic. The old Tuki Tuki bridge will then be removed and approach rails erected at the sides. The Te Mata road was graded, water-tables cleaned and the road surface repaired with river shingle. Plans are prepared for the widening of the filling at Fickling’a Gully by increasing the length of the culvert so as to get 24 feet of roadway on top. The size of the new portion of the culvert will also be increased to about Bft. x 6ft. HERETAUNGA AND MARAEKAKAHO. Plans and specifications were prepared for the cement-concrete pavement on the Farndon-Hastings Main Highway. The culverts on the Maraekakaho-Bridge Pa road were cleaned and outlets made to thq side drains. All the main roads were graded during the month. The washout on the Big Hill road at tho Ohara Bridge approach is being repaired, and the work should be finished next week. Th e fillings at the approach to the new bridge at Maraekakaho were made, and the bridge opened to traffic. Repairs are required at Moody’s Bridge; the centre pier has decayed, and I would suggest building a new wing in concrete with concrete wingwalls, so that the small span can be taken away and an earth filling made in its place. The cost would be about £lOO. Repairs are wanted to th 0 understructure of the Whanakino Bridge. Certain timber members have decayed, and as far as possible concercto should be used when reinstating tho piles and sills. 1 MEEANEE AND OKAWA. Thg filling in place of the No. 1 bridge was completed; this is being metalled and when consolidated sufficiently will be sealed. The bridge has been dismantled and the timber is being carted to Redelyffe depotMetal repairs were carried out on Brookfields and Riverbend roads. Repairs to the Meeance bridge were completed. Surface work is being carried out on the Esk-Pohue road, culverts being cleaned ,and minor metal repairs done. This road requires scarifying and re-grading. Thirty-seven spans have been dismantled on tho old Westshore bridge.

The formation of the PoukawaGreenhill road was completed and the metalling should bo finished thi.’ week. Additional culverts were found necessary and these were placed in position. The repairs to the bridge will bo done as soon as the metalling of the lower portions of Te Onepu road was finished, and a start will be made with the metal patching at the top end next week. The two bridges on Ne; or’s road need renewing. The first one could be replaced with 4in dia. pipes at a cost of about £66. Minor metal repairs were carried out on Greenmeadows-Rissington road, Patoka cutting and on Trask's Folly-Waikare road. Metal repairs

are required on the Glengarry road — cost about £lB. I would like authority to do this while the contractor is on this road in the Petane riding. Re-grading and scarifying is being carried out on the GreenmeadowsRissington road. Now that the heaviest part of this is completed an average of half a mile a day is being done. Minor grading is being done on Hawkston and other by-roads. Surface work is being done and slips removed on Dartmoor road. Watertables are being cleaned on Springfield road.
