OVERSEA NOTES

Betting h: i opened on the big Randwick jumping double. Grosvenor is at the head of the quotations for the hurdle race, followed by the Maorilander Cherry Ripe as one of a group of half-a-dozen on the same line. Mendit is made first favourite and Eastern Scot second for the cross-country event, but Absurdee, the only New Zealander entered, , is not deemed worthy of press mention in the betting reports. New Zealand Bred— Successes coming the way of New Zealand bred horses us reported in Sydney files received last evening include a win by the aged butala— gelding Biskra in the Totalisator Handicap at the S.A.J.C. meeting last Saturday week, for which lie started paying a doublefigure dividend. That he has returned to form and lost none of his pace is shown by his covering the 6 furlongs in l.llj, which equals the previous State record held by himself. On the same day the four-year-old gelding Propeller, by Warplane— American Beauty, got home first in the Canning Purse, 7 furlongs,, at the Canning Park (W.A.) meeting. On the following Tuesday the three-year-old Paper Money—Robur filly Beila opened her winning account in the Maiden Handicap, 6 furlongs, at Gosford (N.S.W.) New Zealand Fed— Dal Eaton is not New Zealand bred, but he passed his early days and did his first racing in the Dominion, and his sojourn here has done him no harm. He had already more than one win to his credit since returning to Australia, and on Saturday week added to the list by taking the principal event, run over a mile, at the Victoria Park (N.S.W.) meeting. George price— The ex-Maoriland rider and trainer is taking a team of four, Magdaff, Ttenoia, Bernesk and Woolita. to the Queensland Turf Club’s meeting at the beginning of June. Price is losing one of his patrons in Mr. G. Bell, who is retiring from the game and selling off his horses, among them being the coming two-year-old colt by Limond—Makepeace purchased at the Wellington yearling sales. The New Zealand bred Reonui, one of Price’s charges, has been running lately with exasperating luck, having filled second place in each of his last three starts. Despite his defeats, he is at the top of the first accept ance list with 9st. 41h. in the Newcastle Chip, Im. 3f., to be run next Saturday. Old N.z. Mentor Retires. The well known Randwick trainer J. Whitworth has retired from his profession, and has taken over an hotel at Bargo. It is nearly 20 years, says a Sydney exchange, since Whitworth came from New Zealand with that fine galloper Artillerie, who was a very hot favourite for a Caulfield Cup, after winning weight-for-age events, but she failed in the Cup. Whitworth did well, however, with Moonbria, Tatterley, Midnight Sun, Bigaroon, Pershore (as a two-year-old), and more recently with Sea Risk. Whitworth was also responsible for bringing out the wellknown lightweight Des O’Connor, who is now at the top of his profession in Brisbane. An Aristocratic Christening— The Saltash—Weltea colt ,says the Sydney “Sun," dominated the yearling market at the last Easter sales. Not till bidding ceased at 6750 guineas was he knocked down to a syndicate comprising Messrs. E. M. Pearce, J. Fell, W. Robinson and R. E. H. Hope. Nom it > s proposed to race the colt as Dominant. The name is appropriate, and his owners no doubt ire hopeful that he will dominate the two-year-old situation next year as forcibly as did Mollison this season. Mollison is owned by one of the partners in Dominant. C, T. Godby has Dominant in hand nt Caulfield, and that trainer is pleased with the manner in which the youngster is progressing.
