U.S. PRESIDENCY

FLUCTUATIONS AND EXCITEMENT MR HOOVER UNDER FIRE OF QUESTIONS. NOMINATION PRACTICALLY CERTAIN. I United Press Assn,— By CableCopyright] [Australian* and N.Z. Press Assn.] (Received 10, 11 a.m.) New York, May 9. An Indianapolis message states that while it appeared on the face of the early returns as though Mr Hoover was carrying a big majority in the primary elections, nevertheless later figures curiously reversed the situation, and gave }lr Watson a majority instead, which, even if it is not substantial, has at least been consistent through the day. Two thousand four hundred and thirty-six of 3610 precincts give Mr Watson 137,632 votes and Mr Hoover 118,22-5. but it is quite possible Hoover may again lead when all the precincts have been heard from. HOOVER INTERROGATED QUESTIONS RESENTED. (Received 10, 11 a.m.] Washington, Mav 9. Mr Hoover appeared before the Senate Investigating Committee. He stated he made no personal expenditure to procure the Republican Presidential nomination. Mr Hoover was sworn similarly with the other witnesses, although it is reputed he is a Quaker. The questioning became so heated that at one time Mr Hoover intimated that the committee was dealing in “small type street talk.” He characterised many sug§estiong in the questions as "slanerous,” "absolutely false,” and “grotesque.” The committee leaves for New York to-night to hear Governor Smith tomorrow.
