WAIPUKURAU

NEWS AND NOTES. (Own Correspondent). Mr. L. J. Taylor had a narrow es-H-pe from a serious accident on Thursday whilst engaged on repair work for the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board. He was standing on t|;e railing around tlje Waipawa substation when an electric shock was received, causing him to fall—fortunately, inwards on to the platform rather than backwards. Both his feet were burned slightly, and for a moment Mr. Taylor was in a numbed condition. His companion, Mr. Ralph Wood, felt a slight shock from the accidental contact that had been made with a power line. Messrs. Owen Cardston and J. Baxter, who are the producers for “The Country Girl,” to be staged at an early date by the Waipukurau Operatic Society, arrived here on Wtdnesday afternoon from Stratford. They controlled the Society’s rehearsal held in the evening. The remains of the late Mrs. Alex Johnston, of Wanstead, were laid to rest in the Waipukurau cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The respect in which the deceased was held was shown by the very large number of settlers who paid their last respects. The funeral was one of the largest yet seen in Waipukurau. The Rev. A. C. McLean officiated at the graveside. Mr. C. J. De Lacey, of tho “Daily News” staff, Carterton, and wellknown throughout the Wairarapa, is at present on a visit to Waipukurau. Mrs. G. Black is at present in Wellington where she is bidding farewell to her sister in-law, Mrs. E. Black, who is leaving on a visit to Scotland.
