AMATEUR SPORTS

THE HAVELOCK NORTH GATHERING VARIED PROGRAMME PRESENTED. LARGE CROWD PRESENT. The Havelock North Amateur Sports Club is to be congratulated ou putting on such a fine programme ot athletic and horse events ou Saturday last. Fortunately, the weather was fine and a large crowd assembled early on the grounds. The Hastings Band kindly attended and gave a selection during the afternoon. Mr. J. D. Heenan, the chairman of the club, and Messrs. J. Beaument and J. Minogue, the joint bon. secretaries, with Mr. H. Speight, the him. treasurer, and a big committee of helpers, deserve to be congratulated on theif efforts. The attendance was very large, over 120 cars being parked and the gate money realised over £5O, or about £l2 more than last year. The gross takings for the day, with more still to come in, amounted to over £l5O. Mr. Hyde acted as judge for the horse events and his decisions were favourably received. Messrs. "Gilbert McKay and Sutherland judged the dancing and Mr. Stickkind was referee for the boxing. The following are the events:— ATHLETICS. 100 yards (under 18). —I. Heenan 1, E. Woon 2, A. Le Sueur; tobacco, Mr. C. Higgs 1. Mr. F. Berry 2. Mr. E. Woon won the points prize in the athletic events. Mr. G. I). Beatson won the Hunter Cup outright, for the second time in succession. Mr. R. Mackenzie won the points prize in the horse events.
