RUGBY FOOTBALL

HASTINGS SUB-UNION YEAR. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD. PROSPECTS OF COMING SEASON. The annual meeting of the Hastings Rugby Football Union was held last evening. The retiring Mr J. H. Fraser presided over a large attendance of delegates. It was decided to accept the nomination of the Tamatea Club as a junior contestant in the competition. The Club’s representative was given a vote.

THE YEAR’S WORKING. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet(previously published in the “Tribune”) the chairman stated that what the Sub-Union had reason to congratulate itself on, was the , manner in which the game had been played. There had been a decided improvement in the science of the game. There was nothing unseemly in the behaviour of the players on the field. This was due to the players themselves but, in a large sense, it was owing to the excellent spirit shown by the referees. Their control had made a wonderful improvement and much of the season’s success was due to them. The speaker then referred to the death of Dr. Boxer who, he said had taken a great interest in the footballer. Referring to the bal-ance-sheet, the chairman said that during the season the income amount ed to £3O. He expected that during the coming season there would be a loss in the income because there was

no Ranfurly Shield. He trusted that everyone would help to increase the income. He hoped that the honorary membership would be increased. The motion was seconded by Mr. G. A. Maddison, who said that he was very optimistic as to the future of Rugby in Hawke’s Bay. He felt sure that the district would field a team during the coining season that would equal the glory attained by past teams. One thing he would like to say: Throughout the season he had not heard of a single instance of a player or member acting in any but a gentlemanly manner, both on or off the field. The many disparaging remarks were not truthful. The motion was carried alter a brief discussion, ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron: Mr. W. E. Hyslop; President: Mr. J. A. Fraser; Vice-presidents: Messrs G, A. Maddison, W. C. Mackenzie and E. A. Grenside ; Hon Secretary: Mr. H. Brown; Hon Treasurer: Mr. F. H. Corbin - Management Committee: Messrs R. M. Hewitt. C. J. Baker, C. Bunker, A. Kirkpatrick, W. O’Neill, S Jensen, A. Mclver and H. Barltrop; Delegates to Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union: Messrs H.Brown and A. Kirkpatrick; Delegates to the special and general meet mgs of the Hawke's Bay Rugby Union: Messrs A. Kirkpatrick and R. M. Hewitt; Hon. Auditors: Messrs Rainbow, Hobbs and Nesbitt; Hon. Solicitor: Mr. L. J. Mackersey; Senion sector: Mr. W. O’Neill; Junior selector: Mr. R. M. Hewitt.
