The Mayor of Hastings (Mr G A. Maddison) returned home from Wellington last evening.
Mr and Airs Hugh Baird left Hastings by qar to-day for a short holiday at Waikaremoana and Morere.
Mr 1 red Newnck and family have left Hastings on a motor tnp to Rotorua and Auckland, via New Plymouth.
Sir R, D. D. McLean was yesterday elected president of the Mauawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association.
Mr Albert Edward Noble Wallace, formerly Australian chess champion has died, aged 54, states a Sydney cable.
Mr T. Oakley, the crack uyclist, will arrive in Hastings to-morrow, and will be the guest of Mr A. H. nayes, of Gray s road.
Sir Francis Colchester-Wemyss and Lieut.-Colonel Jfi. M. du Pre. me English croquet players who have been visiting the Dominion, left by the Mataroa on Sunday morning.
Mr E. A. Pointon. a member of the Hastings Referees’ Association, was accorded a vote of sympathy at the meeting of the Hastings Rugby Sub-Union last evening in the recent loss of his wife.
Mr T. H. Patterson, senior instructor for the Auckland Province in the Department of Agriculture, will leave soon to take up an important position at the Hawkesbury College, New South Wales.
Mr J. AV. Reay. who has been transferred from Christchurch, having been appointed Assistant Traffic Manager of Railways aj Wellington, has arrived there to take up his new duties.
Mr Hector Bolitho. formerly of Auckland has had a second book, “Thistledown and Thunder,’’ publisned in London. It is a story of travel in 14 different countries. Air Bolitho’s first book. “Solemn Boy,” ran into several editions.
The death is reported from Suva of the Bev lather Nicoluleau, aged 62, at Alakogai. A few years ago, as a result of his work among the lepers, he was seized with the dread disease.—Press Association. .
A memorial tablet to the late Rev. Wm. Ready (Auckland) who died in Palmerston North during the recent Simultaneous Mission is to be unveiled at the Cuba Street Methodist Church, Palmerston North next Sunday.
The death occurred at the Cook Hospital on Sunday of Mr Percy Owen Geeves, foreman carpenter of the Waipaoa freezing works. Deceased, who was 55 years of age. had resided in the Gisborne district for over 30 years. Mr Alvin T. Geeves. of Napier. i s a son of the deceased.
Sir Douglas Mawson, the noted Antarctic explorer, and Messrs L. Hunt and H Vickerman have left Dunedin for Lake Manapouri. Sir Douglas is to inspect the property of the New Zealand Hydro-Electric Concessions and draw up a report to the directors on the possibility of extracting nitrates from the air.
Widespread sympathy will be ex. tended to Mr. J. Henrys, the wellknown handicapper, whose youngest son, Air Stewart Henrys, was the victim of the motor lorry fatality near Hunan falls, Auckland, on Saturday night. Some few years ago another son of Air. Henrys was the victim ot a motor fatality in the Wairarapa.
Following a long period of illhealth, the deaith of Brigadier-Gene-ral W. B. Anley, Croix de Guerre, D. 5.0.. Royal Garrison Artillery, occurred in a private hospital in Auckland on Friday. General Anley was 56 years of age, and arrived in Auckland early in November last with Mrs Anley. He had been residing at Ladies’ Mile, Remuera.
One of the oldest and best-known members of the legal profession in Otago, in the person of Air Herbert Webb, collapsed and died while crossing Dowling street Dunedin, yesterday. The late Mr Webb was born in Yorkshire in 1850. He served as president of the Otago Law: Society on one occasion, and for many years was a member of the High School Board of Governors Press Associa tion.
News was received last night of the sudden death of Mr John Nairn, of Pourerere. Waipawa. at Wanganui, where he was on a visit. Air Nairn was a son of tlie late Air C. J.Nairn, one of Hawke’s Bay's earliest settlers. He was born near Cheltenham, England, in 1882, landing in New Zealand with liis parents in 1884. He had spent his childhood and most of his later years at Pourerere.
