THE PICTURE HOUSES
MUNICIPAL. “Brooding Eyes,” at the Municipal Theatre, is a really thrilling picture, much of the effect being obtained by the sinister appearance of Lionel Barrymore...the Man with the Brooding Eyes—a reformed criminal anxious to circumvent his old copartners in crime and win a rightiul inheritance for his daughter. When Lionel Barrymore's eyes go broody you always know’ he is hatching plots, and these bode no good lor Callaghan, played by Montague Love. Hie action is laid in England, m at. historic old castle of which many fine views are given, All the female characters are decidedly colourless but fine delineations are given by all the male actors, Barrymore, Love, Lucien Littlefield, and the other whose name we forget. Also showing is another episode of the serial which enus in a fall of several hundred feet over a cliff. Next week will explain what happened but it seems probable that the Riddle Rider has sprained his ankle. COSY DE LUXE. Two pictures contrasting the way in which woman gets what she wants and got what she wants, are at the Cosy this time to-night, the scene of the first being laid in this XX. century of ours and the second in the XVIII. century. How a young business woman “sells insurance’’ and gets the man she loves, how anothei engages in court intrigues and loses the man she loves, are roughly, the plots of the two tales. Dorothy Gish as “Madame Pompadour’*' and Laura La Plante, the cause of “The Love Thrill’’ are the leading ladies, the former in the historical romance and the latter in the frothy modern comedy. Good entertainment of different types is given in both th&e films. History is apt to be heavy and business comedies boring, but both Laura La Plante and La Pompadour should amuse and intrigue many. “Madam Pompadour” has the additional interest of being a British film, and shows that they have not much now to learn from Uie other side.
