TAWA FLAT DEVIATION

TWO TUNNELS TO BE MADE. PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT WILL DO THE WORK. Wellington. March 17. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon K. S. Williams announced to-day that the Public Works Department shall carry out the piercing and construction of two tunnels one threequarters of a mile long and the other amout 2J miles in connection with the ’l’awa Flat raihvay deviation, all tenders being declined on account of their being much in excess of the department’s estimate. The Minister says the Government is confident that the work can be carried out at a price much below the lowest tender. The tunnels will carry a double line of rails and the estimated cost of the deviation is £950 000.
