BOXING

NAPIER ASSOCIATION MEETS POSITION SATISFACTORY. GOOD PROSPECTS FOR COMING SEASON. The Napier Boxing Association hold its annual meeting in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. V. Brown, who is president of the association, presiding over a fair attendance of members. ANNUAL REPORT. The report of the committee stated as follows: — We have much pleasure in presenting the annual report and balancesheet of the association for the season just ended. There have been five professional contests staged during the season and we feel quite confident in saying that the bouts staged have not been bettered in New Zealand. We have been handicapped to a certaijp extent for the want of amateurs, but from present indications that trouble will nave vanished with the year just concluded. The financial position is not what it should be by a great deal. This was due solely to the effort of staging one more bout, during the season, tor the benefit o members. The association was showing a profit on the season s working up till the last bout in which we regret to s: there was a loss of £93 7s 8d whi. h loss put us £42 0s 9c behind. The total loss for the year was £42 0s 9d and this added to the previous deficit .leaves us considerably in debt. The assets of the Association are, however, £65 over the liabilities so we have nothing to worry about meantime, except the fact that our creditors deserve their money and should be paid as soon as possible, SUBSCRIPTIONS AND ATTENDANCES. For somg unaccountable reason our membership fell off last year to the extent of £5O odd. The general attendance has shown a big advance on the previous year, no doubt due to the popular charges for admission. Our total membership is £247 10s 3d and this is our safeguard. Were we to abandon membership we would lose considerably more as each member pays for a full season whether he attends or not. As is usual there are a number of subscriptions still unpaid. The services of our honorary solicitors will be sought in this connection. THANKS. We desire to express very sincere thanks to the fine efforts of the press during the year. Their assistance has been invaluable both in the way of advertising and reporting. To our honorary medical advisers, solicitors and auditor, to Mr. Mitchell and his orchestra, to Mr. and Mrs. Plested and to the many helping hands we are fortunate enough to have, we extend the thanks they have all earned.

Your committee wishes to extend very special thanks to the Mayor, the councillors and the town clerk, for the real assistance given to local clubs, such as ours, in tne matter of theatre rent. Had it not been for the reduction allowed, we would, no doubt, bar# been in a very lame position indeed. The association during the year lost three of its most keen supporters in Messrs. B. J, Dolan, W. J. McGrath and P. S. Reaney. Their deaths leave a gap in the ranks of the association, and one which will be hard to fill. To Mrs. Dolan, Mrs. McGrath and Mrs. Reaney and their families we tender the sincere sympathy of the association. NEXT CONTEST. The outgoing committee had for some considerable time been endeav. ouring to obtain the services of a good oov from Australia and during the last month were advised that Teddy Green, the New South Wales champion, had accepted an offer made to him. The date selected was Wednesday, 28th inst. Mr. J. V. Brown, in moving the adoption, considered that although a loss was shown, the fine contests staged made up for that. Mr. J. Harris, seconder, said the loss was due to good service to the members. “Take some of the other associations during the season that has just ended,” he said. “Timaru staged only one contest against our five. Wanganui put on two and Invercargill did likewise, but Christchurch did not put on any. We compare with Wellington, and put on one more contest than did Auckland. It shows that every piember of this association received value for his money.” The report and balance-sheet were adopted without further discussion. EI,ECTION OF OFFICERS.
