PUKETAPU SPORTS

A POPULAR GATHERING RECORD ATTENDANCE ON SATURDAY. EXCELLENT ENTRIES FOR ALL EVENTS. Despite the inclement weather there was a record attendance at the Puketapu Sports held on grounds kindly lent by Mr. W. Little, on Saturday afternoon. The popularity of this annual meeting was evidenced by the unusually large number oi visitors, there being over 240 motor cars on the grounds. Saturday’s programme easily eclipsed all other previous efforts In order to provide for the comfort of the spectators numbers of seats were placed pn the grounds. The sheepdog trials, as usual, attracted a large number of competitors, and most of the dogs put up good performances. The judge, Mr F. Lopdell, expressed himself as being very pleased with the work shown. The running, more especially in the amateur section, was excellent. The finishes reflected great judgment on the part of Mr. Norman McKenzie, who succeeded in bringing the large fields within inches of each other. The ladies’ events also were very popular, and surprisingly good form was shown by a number of the girls. In the professional section the fields were not so large but some good running was witnessed. The running high jump proved an excellent contest and a really good go between Reg. Young and Arnott resulted in a tie.

For cycling the track was on the heavy side, while a stiff breeze added to the difficulties of the riders.

As in the case of firevious meetings, the horse events were outstanding. In all about 60 horses competed, and the leaping in both the ladies’ and the open competitions was of a very high standard. The laurels for both classes went to Mr. 0. Nelson’s Blue Moon, a much admired and popular performer. Mrs \V Paul, who had already donated a silver cup for the maiden leaping and one for the ladies’ leaping competition, added a gold watcli to these trophies for the rider of the winner of the maiden competition, and a fine gold brooch to the lady rider in the ladies’ leaping competition. Mr. Alan Stevens secured the gold watch, on Mrs. AV. Paul's Chum, while Miss Nelson, riding Blue Moon, gained the brooch.

PRESENTATION’ OF TROPHIES.

At the conclusion of these events Mr. H. M. Campbell, M.P., patron of the club, presented the various trophies. In congratulating the club upon the successful gathering, Mr. Campbell said that the large attendance was proof that the club’s efforts were appreciated and that they provided a day of excellent sport. The club was most grateful for the donation of trophies and special prizes which had gone far in making the meeting such a success. Mr. Campbell especially thanked Mrs. Paul, a very generous donor, and congratulated she winners upon their success and also upon the fine performance of their mounts. In handing the cup (presented by himsdlf) to Mr E. Nelson, on behalf of Mr. 0. Nelson, the owner of Blue Moon,' who won the open leaping, Mr. Campbell said that Blue Moon had won so many cups for Mr. Nelson that he thought he would himself wish to donate a cup which might apropriately be called the Blue Moon Cup. Mr. A. V. S. Reid here intimated that Mr Nelson had promised to donate a cup to the club for leaping.

Mr. Campbell, on behalf of the club, then presented Mr Angus Dods, who had judged the horse events, with a bridle in appreciation of his assistance. To Mr, Ixjpdell, who acted as judge for the dog trials, he presented a silver salver. In returning thanks, Mr. Dods remarked that the jumping had been excellent. He was particularly impressed with the fine riding of the ladies, it being pleasing to see so many competing. In • the Highland dancing, the judge, Mr. Sutherland, complimented th© young performers on their fine dancing. Mr George Graham’s gold medal for the best novice was won by Master Ivan MacMillan. A new attraction was motor driving events. Competitors had to drive along a row of petrol tins placed a chain apart, and after dropping a potato in each had to race back. These classes drew large entries and some rather skilful driving was witnessed.

It is quite impossible to single out the various officials who had done so much to make the gathering such a success, but a special word of praise is due to Mr. F. Bryne, the energetic secretary, for the excellent manner in which he carried out his duties. The Hawke’s Bay Regimental Band was in attendance and played a number of fine selections. DANCE IN THE EVENING. In the evening a ball was held in the Puketapu Hall when there were about 150 couples present. The building was most attractively decorated, and the floor was in firstclass order. Patrons had a very happy time, it being a fitting conclusion to the afternoon's sport.
