AUSTRALIA WINS WANGANUI HOPELESSLY BEATEN. HOME SIDE FIELDS WELL. Wanganui, March 17. Resuming with three down for 230, in reply to Wanganui’s first innings □f 83, the Australian cricketers put up a total of 426 on Saturday and sent Wanganui for a second strike. The local team made a better showing than on Friday, but were all dismissed for 132, the visitors winning the match by an innings and 213 runs. Ponsford’s 101 made on Friday remained the top score of the match, Grimmett, with 73, being the nearest approach. Schneider made 64 by dashing cricket. The Wanganui bowlers found themselves against a hard task when the match was resumed, the visitors’ wide range of strokes worrying them, but the fielding was of good standard, the fieldsmen accounting for four wickets. Jackson and Grimmett provided crisp strokes that delighted the spectators. Kippax received an ovation on going to the crease, but was l.b.w. off the first ball. Oxenham came on and slammed several balls to the boundary. but was cleaned bowled at 27. Grimmett skied one from Holland to Harris just after lunch and Alexander partnered Morton, who replaced Oxenham and the scoring slowed down. The remaining batsmen did not show anything spectacular, and the innings, closed for 428. Nine different bowlers were used by the visitors in Wanganui’s second attempt.
