HASTINGS SUB-UNION,
ANNUAL REPORT.
In the report of the Hastings Rugby Sub-Union to be presented at the annual general meeting to. be held to-morrow evening in the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club rooms, commencing at 8 o’clock, the management congratulated all concerned in the continued progress of the old game, the standard of play being high in all grades and the interest of the public being well maintained to the close of the season. •
The heartiest, congratulations were extended to Messrs M. Brownlie, C. Brownlie, B. Grenside, and J. Swain on being amongst those finally selected to the great honour of representing New Zealand in the South African tour after what was probably the most exhaustive search for talent eyer embarked upon by any Rugby body.
The usual Sub-union matches were played, that against Central H.B. being wfin, and the one against East Coast lost. The iunior reps, lost to Napier, and won against Central Hawke’s Bay. The competitions were played as usual, Pirates winning the senior grade after an exciting second round during which four tenin= all had a chance of winning the premiership. The winners of the Hastings sections of the competition were; Juniors. Hastings: third g r <idc Hastings; fourth grade. High School. One of the most popular successes of the season was that of Celtic seniors winning the Lane Cup in the knock-out competition. The primary schools competitions again aroused great interest and we must thank the masters who spent so much time in teaching the boys the rudiments of the game and how to lie good sportsmen The members of the Referees' Association again were to the tore 111 their unflagging zeal for the game, and the committee wishes to extend to them its sincerest thanks for their assistance. Thanks are also due to Messrs Rainbow’ and Hobbs, non. auditors, and Mr. L. J. Mackersey, hon. solicitor for services rendered during season. It is with sincere regret that the committee have to record the death of Dr. Boxer, hon. medico to the Subunion whose unfailing attendance nt matches was of utmost value to the union.
The committee's thanks and appreciation are tendered to Drs. Johnston nnd Wright, and Messrs Smart and Williams for theii attention to the injured, to the Press and the Police for their assistance during the season. In conclusion, the committee wishes to convey its thanks to the players and all who so loyally helped during the past season, and trusts that the-.r support will be again forthcoming in 1928.
The balance-sheet snowed th e expenses for the season at £347 6/10, and the surplus income from the season at £29 11/10. together with further income from the Wanganui match 1926 £43 8/3, making a total surplus of £73 0/1.
