NAPIER CLUB NIGHT. LAST OF THE SEASON. The Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held their final sports of the season last night. One or the most popular events was a novelty cycle race between an old-fashioned high wheeler, a tandem cycle mounted by two boys and a present day cycle with the gear wheel at the driving base reversed. Something like 3UO yards in a quarter mile was given way to the last named, and great was the laughter of the crowd when the rider was seen to be pedalling away for all his worth but making little progress. The old timer won by a toot. C. Sutton from scratch in the one mile event, won in time that was several seconds taster than when he beat Standen m the invitation scratch race a couple of weeks ago. A meeting of the executive of the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held in the Y.M. C.A. rooms last evening when Mr. R. M. Hewitt presided over a good attendance, and a volume of business was transacted. The Otane Club wrote enclosing a programme of their meeting which is to be held on the 29th inst., and in view of this the committee deemed it advisable to waive their club night on that date. The H.B.R.U. wrote enclosing a cheque for £3 1/8 being half of nett profit derived from the Maddison Cup meeting. A hearty vote ot thanks was passed to the Union in its donation. Considerable discussion took place re the proposed electric light meeting which will be held on March 14th next, “Show Night.” The Wellington Centre have promised to send through a strong team, and the chib intend to invite Mr. Tommy Oakley, the New Zealand grass champion, and with Oakley and Carswell competing a successful meeting can be assured. The runners of the team will probably include Charlie Jenkins and Fleming (sprints) and Priestly (distances), Carswell (cyclist), and Ramson (hurdles).
