The Queen has practically recovered from the effect of the cold which she contracted a week ago and which prevented Her Majesty from attending the State opening of Parliament. Mr W. Baillie left Hastings this morning for Wellington a holiday tnp Mr and Mrs Royston Campbell, of Pukahu, left Hastings this morning on a holiday vist to Wellington. Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P. Dunedin, is soon to leave on a six months’ tour of Europe. Mrs T. W. Lewis, who has been on a visit to Wellington, arrived back in Hastings on Saturday evening. Mr and Mrs W. J. Bye, and Miss Alice Bye, of Te Awanga,’ left by the mail train this morning for Wellington eu route to England. Mr Lovell, of the firm of Lovell and Paynter, Hastings, left this morning for Wellington on a holiday for the benefit of his health. Major A. J. Manson, M.C. Ist Bn. H.B. Regt., left this morning for Waipukurau to command the casual camp, which is being held there this week The Rev. F. Copeland, and Mr R. J. Doubleday, left Hastings this morning for Christchurch, where they will at tend the Methodist conference opening there this week. Miss Violet Russell, who has been on a visit to Hawke’s Bay, extending over two years as the guest of Mr Harold Russell and Mrs R. Nairn, left Hastings this morning on her return to England. Captain H. L. Seligson M.P., of South Africa, sailed by the Niagara from Vancouver on Saturday on a tour of Australia and New Zealand, mapping out a scheme to foster inter Imperial and international trade relations. Mrs McDuff Boyd, who has been engaged during the past two years travelling in England, Scotland, the Continent of Europe, and South Africa, arrived in Hastings on Saturday night looking fit and well. A message from Los Angeles states that Bebe Daniels, the film star, was gravely injured and narrowly escaped death in au automobile accident while filming a scene for a forthcoming cinema play. Her back was severely strained and there are possibly internal injuries. Mr F. Slater, who has been in hospital for the past fourteen weeks, as the result of a broken leg, has now been discharged from the institution, and his many -friends in Hastings will be glad to hear that he is making a good, if slow, recovery, Lieutenant E. L. Heywood, of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cam bridge’s Own), who recently arrived in the Dominion on exchange from the British Army in India has been granted the local rank of lieutenant, with seniority as from February 29th, 1920, and has been appointed area' officer, area 9c, and Adjutant, the Nelson-Marlborough Mounted Rifles, Blenheim. Special bursaries to enable students to take a course in home science und er bond as teachers are annually awarded by the Education Department, and some time ago the Otago University Council was notified that only 10 would be issued this year.
