ANOTHER ROAD GRADER

FOR USE ON COUNTY ROADS. COUNCIL SANCTIONS PURCHASE “I don’t feel that I am doing my duty if 1 don’t keep the grader going,” said Cr. G. B. Beamish at to-day’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council, when urging that a further power grader be purcHased. “1 find that the Austin grader, which was got for the Okawa riding, in the last 18 months has been 198 days in Okawa and 420 days in othe r ridings. It takes the grader 80 days to go over all the ridings. All the watertables want cleaning and the culverts opened up, or else, when the bad weather comes, much damage will be done." Our benzine bill is £5OO a month." said the chairman. “What with the lorries and tractors we will soon be getting up into the clouds." Cr. Turner; Where have the graders been? The chairman: I don’t know, but they are burning benzine. Cr. Logan: I must have a grader by some means or other. I can’t wait 80 days for one. I will second Cr Beamisb’s proposal that another grader be purchased. Cr. T. E. Crosse: 1 don’t think we would be justified in getting another grader I think that once the Te Aute road is tar-sealed one grader could be released. The chairman: As the tar-sealing increases the work of grading will decrease. Cr. Beamish: The sooner we get the grader the better. It was then agreed to purchase a further road grader.
