IRON POT BRIDGE

"MAY GO ANY TIME," SAYS ENGINEER. REPAIR WORK TO BE CARRIED OUT. A recommendation that authority be given the engineer to proceed with repairs to the iron Pot bridge, at an estimated cost of £92, was the cause of a little discussion at the meeting of the Napier Borough Council last evening. The Mayor doubted whether the council had the authority to spend any money on the bridge. He admitted that some years ago the council had spent £BOO on it, but of later years nothing had been done. He thought it advisable to obtain the views of the solicitor on the matter. "When all is said and done there is nothing but water rushing out under the bridge on to the Harbour Board sections and we don’t want to be liable for another £BOO unnecessarily, should the bridge be stripped down,” added Mr. Brown. It was explained by Cr. P. F. Higgins that the committee had thought the matter urgent and had recommended the expenditure of £92 without prejudice. “The bridge may go at any time,” stated the engineer. He thought it necessary that some repairs be carried out quickly so as to temporarily strengthen the structure. "It is far too important a matter to allow to go by.” declared Cr. Higgins, whoso motion that the work be proceeded with subject to tho solicitor’s report, was carried.
