POWER SHORTAGE
NAPIER COUNCIL’S ASSISTANCE EVERY POSSIBLE AID GIVEN. "At present the Napier Borough is generating power for its own requirements. and in addition supplying approximately 12,000 units per day to the Department,” stated Mr J. !’■ Woodson, power-house superintendent, last evening when he referred, in his report presented to the Napier Borough Council, to the question ot the shortage of power at Mangahao. “AnJ economy eiffected by the borough and its consumers will assist in improving the general position, as such economy will provide greater facility to supply more power to the department. He suggested that the following means of reduction be effected (2) Discontinuing shop window ligliting after shopping hours. (2) Switching off A.C. lighting, which includes the Port and part of ae Hills, at 11 p.m. It is not necessary to curtail the borough D.C. street lighting in the centre and other parts of the town where it does not affect the position. (3) Swiching off domestic waterheaters. (4) Exercising rigid economy in the use of light and power. (5) Not using electric cookers where other means of cooking exist. (6) Power users who can arrange to do part or the whole of their work between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. will materially help the situation. Mr J. W. Callaghan: We are doing all we can to help bv giving surplus power to the Government. The Mayor explained that the committee had been given an absolute free hand in assisting the Government in every possible way. He pointed out that i n most cases the suggestions had already been put into effect.
