TRAVELLING DE LUXE
NAPIER TO HASTINGS. IN ONE HOUR FORTY MINUTES. The 1.20 ’bus from Napier to Hastings left at 1.35 yesterday. The traveller, being in a hurry, was glad that it left at all. About ten minutes later, the ’bus arrived at the level crossing beyond Awatoto. crossed the crossing, changed its mind, turned back over the crossing and stood still. What was it waiting for? There was a rumour of a train. It came—the train, that is. It came 20 minutes later. Debouching from it was a crowd that looked too great to be accommodated in the ’bus just vacated. Those evacuated from the ’bus boarded the train. Bound for Hastings? Not a bit of it. At Clive the passengers had to alight and squeeze into a smaller ’bus than the one they had left. This 'bus (with two on the step for part of the way arrived triumphantly in Hastings about 3 p.m. Would it not be easier to run a couple of trains?
