MOTOR SMASH
NEAR STORTFORD LODGE TWO MEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. A serious motor smash occurred in Hastings last night at about 10.15, whereby two men, Mr. Thomas Fisher, of Turakina, a farmer, ana Mr. Duncan Stanhope, of Frimley, were severely injured. Conflicting statements as to the cause of the accident are current, one of which says that the driver of a motor car travelling along Heretaunga street near Stortford Lodge, intending to turn into Greys road, signalled to that effect to two cars coming behind him. One of the drivers, observing the signal, clapped on his brakes at once, but the other, not seeing the sign, kept on his course. Th© leading driver, noticing nils, altered his mind, and instead of turning into Greys road, kept straight on and the car with the brakes on skidded across the road on to the side-walk, crashed into a telegraph pole and thence into a fence on the corner of Greys road, knocking down Mr. Stanhope, a pedestrian, before he had’ time to get out of the wqy. Another account says that the car ii> front turned into Grays road, allegedly without, or with insufficient warning, with the result that the car behind put on hrades suddenly, and, sikddiug, came co grief. Mr. L G. Scott, the driver of the x-ar whit’i collided with the post, escaped with shock mid a shaking, but Mr. Fisher, who was the owner of the car, sustained injuries which, after receiving immediate medical attention, necessitated his removal to the Napier Hospital. Mr. Stanhope sustained a broken leg anil he was also despatched to Napier.
