GOLDEN WEDDING.

MR AND MRS A. STEDMAN. An interesting story of life in the pioneering days is associated with the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Arthur Stedman, of Alfred street, Auckland, which was celebrated on Wednesday, states the Auckland “Star.’l As a boy of seven, Mr Stedman arrived in Auckland with his father in the ship Frenchman, in 1860. For some time the family lived in Auckland, but later they set out for Christchurch in a schooner of 25 tons. In these days of speedy travel it is hard to realise a journey of a month between Auckland and the South Island. That was the experience of the Stedman family. While off Napier food supplies ran out, and Dr. Stedman had to go ashore." He obtained fresh meat by shooting a sheep. Educated at Christ’s College, Mr Stedman joined the Bank of New South Wales in Christchurch, later being transferred to Wanganui. He was appointed branch manager there, and held that position at Greymouth Nelson, Timaru, Wanganui ami Napier He later returned to Christchurch as manager, and retired there after 51 years of service. He and his wife came to live in the North about eight years ago. While in Wanganui he met his future wife, Miss Anna Lomax, stepdaughter of the late Hon. R. Pharazyn, M.L.C. In the course of the happy days in Wanganui Mr Stedman introduced Rugby football and assisted ip the promotion of rowing. There are four sons, Messrs A. L, and Nelson Stedman, of Auckland Gerald Stedman, of’ Hawera, and Ralph Stedman, of Nelson.
