TROUBLE IN CHRISTCHURCH. MAYOR’S STATEMENT. Christchurch, February 5. The Mayor (the l(ev. J. K. Archer), in a. statement to the press, says the Citv Council will not yield to the buchers’ threat to boycott the cityabattoir because the council is permitting a meat shop to be opened m the new municipal market. The Mayor said ho did not believe the butchers would do anything so foolish as to withdraw slaughtering from the abattoir, “but.” he added, “if they do so. it will net make the slightest difference to the attitude ol he present Citv Council towards the municipal market. As far as I -an see. the market is already an established success, and it will remain and be developed. If tin butchers take the action that is suggested, the council will deal with their conduct when occasion arises, although I am not in a position to say what will be the lino of action. “The primary aim of the council will he to maintain a satisfactory meat supply for the city, and the citizens mav feel confident this will be done. ’ ’
