HAWKE’S BAY CHAMPIONSHIP H. 5.0.8. PASS FOURTH CENTURY. HERETAUNGA LEAD T.O.A. The sixth series of the Hawke s Bay cricket championship competition was commenced on Saturday when there was some good batting and good bowling. High School Old Boys met United and batting first Old Boys look the field the whole afternoon to smack up the tall score of 421. Three batsmen, Dolbel (116 not out), Worker (71). Cowan (70), were mainly responsible for this great score. In the other game Technical Old Boys were dismissed by Heretaunga for the low score of 167, thanks to the bowling of Pearson. However, the Hastings lads fared even worse with the bat and before the afternoon was finished they, too, were all out for the poor showing of 149. Brief details of the two games are as follow:— H.5.0.8.’S TALL SCORING. Old Boys opened with Worker and Owen, the pair scoring fairly freely until 60 wa s reached, then Williams partnered Worker to bring the total to 86. Heaney was next to join the skippdr and they sent the runs up to 139, when Reaney was bowled. One run later the fourth wicket had fallen then Cowan and Worker became associated. The pair were batting well when Worker was given out legbefore after making 71 of the 173 recorded. Dolbel donned the pads to make a fine stand with Cowan, the partnership adding over a hundred runs before being broken by Stevenson catching Cowan tor 70. Chadwick, Gilbertson and Gifford all made fair contributions while Dolbel con- ■ tinued to bang away, and while asso. ciated with Gifford he ran into treble figures. Shephard and Evans brought the score to 80 when Shephard was dismissed for 35. Once more the bowlers reaped a harvest and before the century was reached eight wickets had fallen. Cohen and Ellis held the fort until the total was 114 then A. EHiott joined Cohen for the final stand which brought the aggregate to 167, when Cohen was caught after knocking u> 41. The Hastings lads were given a fair start by White and Beuth who put on 43 before the former was caught. Two wickets included Lowry’s for seven runs, then there was a short stay until Pirie dismissed two batsmen in the one over. Paterson joined Beuth and the pair called a halt to the trundlers. bringing the total to 136 when th© newcomer was dismissed. Two more wickets, including the opening batsman who had made 43. fell without an alteration to the total. High Schoo) made 81 in the second visit (Craig 23 and Reaney 26). Old Boys won by an innings and 79 runs. Scinde B v. Taradale: The first innings of Scinde realised 228 (Condon 61. Tyers 49, Riddell 42). Taradale had made 201 for the loss of seven wickets (R. Fayen 58, Blair 48) when stumps were drawn. For Taradale H. Boggs captured five wickets for 42' runs. United v. Scinde A : United made 119 (Tate 21 not out, Seed 24) in the first innings. Scinde's reply was 153 (Yarwood 43, G. Pell 21, C. Pell 21, Wilson 20).
