FISHY CAR

has fins and a tail. WILL TYRES STAND? London, Jan. 21. The “Blue Bird,” in which Malcolm Campbell, the famous speed motorist, will defend Britain’s speed record (created by Major Segrave) against American attack at Daytona Beach, Florida, next month, has been completed. Planned on aeroplane lines, it resembles a bottle-nosed whale, with tne fins well back, the bottom tail of the fins being cut off. Aeroplane radiators are fixed upright above the fins, and there are 16 exhausts, in rows of tour on either side. The propable only other competitor lor Sir Charles Wakefield’s £lOOO trophy, which is regarded as the Schneider Cup of motoring, will be Lockhart, the equally-famous American driver, although the “Daily News” expert expresses the opinion that he will be unable to get American tyres which will stand the strain of 220 miles an hour, at which he is aiming. It has been stated that Campbell s car resembles a giant projectile with the driver covered in, excepting his eyes and the top of his head. A fin is fitted at the rear to ensure directional stability. The engine will develop 900 horse power, and is a replica of that used in the 'plane with which Flight-Lieutenant Webster won the Schneider Cup. This engine is still on the Air Ministry’s secret list, and only an Air Force mechanic is permitted access to itu interior.
