PLUNKET SHIELD

SECOND MATCH AT AUCKLAND PLAY ON A FAST WICKET. CANTERBURY BATS FIRST. (Per Press Association). Auckland, Jan. 8, There is fine weather for the second Plunket Shield match here, which commenced at 11.30 o’clock. The teams are as follows:— Canterbury. Page (captain), Hayes, Newman, Evans, McEwan, Jacobs, Merritt, Nixon, Read, Hamilton, Gregory. Auckland—Dacre (captain), Bowley, Anthony, Cooper, Garrard, Gillespie, Matheson, Scott, G. L. Weir, Player, Mills. Canterbury won the toss and batted first on a fast wicket, Gregory and Hamilton being the opening batsmen.

Matheson’s first over yielded three singles. Player was on at the other end. Gregory square cut the initial ball for three. Playing cautiously the batsmen raised double figures in ten minutes. Gregory got double figures in 20 minutes. Neither batsman was troubled by the bowling, although Player was keeping a nice length. Hamilton hit the first boundary off Player. For half an hour’s play 30 were sent up. G. L. Weir then replayed Player, Gregory turning him quickly for a brace and singled him on the off. The Canterburians ran well between the wickets and scoring short ones. At 35 Anthony replaced Matheson, Gregory slamming his first ball through the covers to the fence. Weir dropped a short one in the next over, Gregory pulling it to the boundary. Hamilton cut Anthony for a couple and then pulled him to the bundary for four, bringing up 50 in 52 minutes. CONFIDENT BATSMEN. The opening pair were playing confidently and brightly, both being obviously bent on getting runs. Hamilton was then dropped by Matheson off Weir at leg and that batsman began to open out wiih hard driving, a couple of good strokes being cut off on the line. Gregory escaped a chance of stumping off Anthony and after a bye had been run the trundler got Hamilton leg before. 58—1—27. Jacobs was the incomer and Bowley came on to get him for a single, the Canterburian playing the ball on. 61—2—1. The game had now been under way exactly an hour. Page, the visiting skipper, filled the vacant crease. The scores at the luncheon adjournment were as follows:— CANTERBURY. First Innings. WELLINGTON. Wellington, Jan. 6. The Wellington-Otago match commenced to-day. (The first part of the introduction to the game has not reached us). With the score at 39 Airey edged one from Alloo into the slips and Vorrath accepted a catch—39—l—l7. Lamason was the next in. Eastman returned to the field at this stage. Lamason opened confidently, and a eouple of boundary shots brought the total to 50 after 47 minutes play. At 62 Eastman replaced Torrance and Lamason scored seven off his first over. With the score at 86 Tattersail was smartly stumped by Galland off A 1100—86—2—24. Dustin followed. The century appeared after 68 minutes, Lamason having put on 50 it 44 minutes. With'the score at 108 Lamason was smarthly caught by McMullen off Douglas—loB—3—s2. Lambert was the next and Elmes replaced Douglas and Alloo replaced Torrance. Lambert, when he was 17 gave a chance at mid-off, off Elmes, but the fieldsman dropped' the ball. At 1 o'clock the score was 3 for 131—Lambert not out 19, Dustin not out 10. With the total at 150, Knight relieved Alloo and Torrance came on again in place of Elmes, but the change had no effect on the patsmen; who continued to score well, the tally at the luncheon adjournment being 3 for 174 —Lambert not out 46, Dustin 24; Extras 10. CANE’S XI. v. OTAKI. The match between the Otaki touring team and the XI. captained bv F. F. Cane was continued on Nelson Park. Napier, to-day in good weather The Nanier XI. continued their innings and at the luncheon adjournment were all out for 397. a comfortable lead on the Otaki team. Details :— SIMCOX'S ELEVEN.
